Russia threatens to completely stop gas supplies to Armenia from November 1
Russia may completely stop gas supplies to Armenia from November 1 if Yerevan does not fulfill a series of political demands from Moscow. This was reported by the Armenian newspaper "Hraparak" citing Russian sources, writes Deutsche Welle.
Currently, Russian gas supplies are temporarily suspended due to planned maintenance, and Armenia's needs are met by reserves in storage facilities. According to newspaper sources, on November 1, a situation may arise after which supplies will not resume.
Among Moscow's demands are Yerevan's refusal to discuss the future of the Russian military base in Gyumri and to take actions against companies with Russian capital, including "South Caucasus Railway" and "Gazprom".
Russia also allegedly demands that Armenia choose between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union. Yerevan must either revoke the law on launching the process of European integration or set a date for a referendum. Other demands include stopping the criminal prosecution of pro-Russian politicians and appointing a vice-premier acceptable to the Kremlin.
Armenia, meanwhile, is looking for alternative gas sources. The country still relies almost entirely on Russian supplies: in 2023, "Gazprom" exported about 2.7 billion cubic meters of gas there. Armenian authorities state the possibility of purchasing fuel from Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iran.
Relations between Moscow and Yerevan have significantly deteriorated in recent months. Russia imposed restrictions on imports of alcohol, vegetables, fruits, fish, dairy products, and flowers from Armenia. In response, Armenia began redirecting its exports to other markets, including European countries.
