A new form of repression has been used against students of the "extremist" university who were in Belarus: a ban on leaving the country. How widespread this phenomenon is, is unknown, writes "Belsat".
Students of the European Humanities University in Vilnius who are currently in Belarus have begun to face restrictions on leaving the country – being released under a travel ban. Belsat is aware of several such cases, but it is difficult to assess how widespread this phenomenon is.
On April 14, 2026, the Supreme Court of Belarus banned the university's activities and declared it an "extremist organization".
From June 2 to 4, 2026, security forces conducted a coordinated series of searches and interrogations across the country against individuals associated with EHU and their families. A month ago, human rights defenders counted 175 victims of searches and interrogations in connection with EHU. According to human rights defenders, investigators threatened people with charges under "extremism" articles – including retroactively, for payments to the university as far back as 2016.
EHU reported that after receiving "extremist" status, they lost about 100 students in a month: most of them studied remotely from Belarus, but even 10 students living in Lithuania left EHU.
Meanwhile, on October 1, the official opening ceremony of the 2026/2027 academic year will take place in Vilnius.
