From September 1, innovations will appear in school canteens in Belarus. The government approved the corresponding changes with its resolution.
Now, for single meals in schools, a unified meal format will be introduced. During the first shift, it will be called a second breakfast, and during the second — an afternoon snack. It will consist of three components: salad, a hot dish, and a drink.
Also, schoolchildren will be divided into three age groups: students of 1st-5th grades, 6th-8th grades, and 9th-11th grades. Currently, nutrition is organized according to a different principle — for children aged 6-10 and 11-18 years. It is expected that the new system will allow for more accurate consideration of the physiological needs of children of different ages.
Finally, from September 1, the size of monetary norms for schoolchildren's nutrition will increase by 5%. Subsequently, these amounts will automatically increase annually, taking into account the growth of retail food prices.
It is also planned to expand the list of products that can be used for preparing school meals. More ready-made semi-finished products — meat, fish, flour, vegetable, and others — may appear on the menu, provided they meet the requirements for children's nutrition.
In addition, restrictions on the use of certain products, including bakery products, lard, and meat pâtés, will be lifted.
Vending machines with food and drinks are also planned to be installed in school canteens. The main focus in their assortment will be on products from Belarusian manufacturers.
Plans to change the approach to school nutrition became known back in spring during a working group led by government head Alexander Turchyn.
The topic of school nutrition was previously discussed at a meeting with Alexander Lukashenka in October 2025. At that time, Alexander Lukashenka drew attention to how much the current menu meets the tastes and needs of schoolchildren. At the end of 2025, a new menu option also began to be tested in schools.
