Romania has approved the development of a deposit containing over 50 million tons of magnesium-bearing rock. The project is expected to reduce Europe's dependence on supplies from China, from which about 97% of the magnesium used in the EU currently comes, writes Bild.
The extracted raw material is planned to be processed in the Romanian city of Săliște, where magnesium hydroxide and high-purity magnesium oxide are to be produced. Later, the project may be expanded to include the production of metallic magnesium.
The project executor, Mineral Proiect Invest SA, estimates the necessary investments at approximately €400 million. For raw material transportation, the company plans to use a cable car and electric dump trucks to reduce emissions, noise, and dust.
The project aligns with the EU's critical raw materials strategy: by 2030, the European Union aims to extract at least 10% of its annual strategic resource needs within the bloc and process at least 40%.
