In Rome, due to drought, the water level in the Tiber River has dropped so much that the remains of the ancient Neronian Bridge have reappeared above the surface. Such occurrences are still considered rare, but in recent years they have become more frequent amidst prolonged heatwaves and droughts, writes Euronews.
The bridge was built in the middle of the 1st century AD. About two thousand years ago, it could be used to reach the area where the Vatican is located today. Additionally, the bridge was part of the route for the triumphal processions of Roman emperors.
According to historians, the structure could not withstand intense traffic, so within one hundred to one hundred and fifty years after its construction, the bridge fell into disrepair. It was finally destroyed during the Gothic Wars in the 6th century.
However, the remains of the piers were still used for a long time to install water mills. In the late 19th century, they were also demolished during the construction of the Victor Emmanuel II Bridge.
In recent years, the remains of the Neronian Bridge have become increasingly visible above the surface of the Tiber. This is attributed to prolonged heatwaves and droughts leading to a significant lowering of the river's water level.
