Another Kyiv court refused to consider the case of journalist Kardash detained on suspicion of espionage

The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv was unable to form a panel of judges with access to classified information who could consider the case of Belarusian journalist Inna Kardash, detained this January on suspicion of espionage, Radio Svaboda writes .

The case was transferred to the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv in early August. However, the hearing date has not yet been set.

Earlier, the investigation sent the indictment for consideration to the Podilskyi District Court of Kyiv. The choice of this court was determined by the area of Inna Kardash's detention. This took place in the Georgian cuisine restaurant Khachapuri Ta Vyno in the Podilskyi district of the Ukrainian capital.

However, the judges of the Podilskyi District Court could not even begin to consider the indictment, as they did not have access to classified information. Earlier, Kateryna Yusupova, Inna Kardash's lawyer, also complained about the impossibility of familiarizing herself with all the case materials, as many of them are marked "secret" and have not been declassified in the manner prescribed by law.

Then the Kyiv Court of Appeal approved the decision to return Inna Kardash's case for consideration to the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv, which, in fact, had approved all decisions at the pre-trial investigation stage, including those on extending her detention, seizing property, and so on.

Inna Kardash was detained on January 21 this year and charged with espionage on behalf of the State Security Committee of Belarus.

At the time of her detention, Inna Kardash was already working at the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. According to the investigation, she contacted the KGB through a Belarusian citizen who "knowingly for her carried out confidential cooperation with the special services of Belarus."

The pre-trial investigation of her case has been completed. After the judicial review of the indictment for compliance with Ukrainian legislation, the court must begin to consider the case on its merits.

Inna Kardash is currently in the Kyiv pre-trial detention center.
