During one of the discussions at the "New Belarus 2026" conference, Pavel Latushka speculated: an window of opportunities for Belarus will open when Russia has no means to sustain its proxy. This window is approaching because oil refineries are burning in Russia, Wildberries is facing issues, and the authorities cannot place federal loan bonds. Due to these and other problems, according to Latushka, Russia might not have the money to always support Lukashenka's regime.
Therefore, the politician believes, a transition of power and negotiations will be launched in the country.
Latushka considers a negative scenario for Belarus unlikely.
"No, it's potentially possible, of course, but imagine Russian troops entering Belarusian territory when they failed to defeat Ukraine. They defined Ukraine and the Ukrainian people as the main existential enemy for Russia, falsely called them Nazis, and tomorrow they tell Russian society: you know, it turns out the Belarusian people are also Nazis.
This is madness, I don't imagine how the Kremlin's propaganda will explain its aggression in Belarus. And if we, at that time, agree with the nomenclature, who will Russian society be fighting against?"
Therefore, Latushka believes that Lukashenka has one way out to preserve independence.
