24-year-old guy from Asipovichy who wanted to get into IT was sentenced under a political article, though he did nothing
Mikita Mikhadziuk was accused of "attempting to facilitate extremist activity".

Mikita Mikhadziuk is 24 years old. He is from Asipovichy, where he graduated from the local gymnasium in 2019.
After school, the young man moved to the capital and enrolled in the full-time state-funded department of the Belarusian State Technological University. He studied at the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Engineering, specializing in 'Chemical Technology of Inorganic Substances, Materials, and Products'.
While living in Minsk, Mikita dreamed of changing professions and entering the IT sphere. He independently studied to become a Java developer and combined his studies with part-time jobs in nightlife establishments and other temporary earnings.
The young man spent a lot of time playing online games and skateboarding. In social networks, he often pondered starting his own startup.
The trial of Mikhadziuk took place in the Minsk City Court. The young man was found guilty under Part 1 of Art. 14 and Part 1 of Art. 361-4 of the Criminal Code ('attempting to facilitate extremist activity').
He was sentenced to restricted freedom.
Mass political repressions in the country began after 2020. At that time, Alexander Lukashenka lost to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, but did not hand over power to her, forcing her to leave the country. Mass popular protests against the dictatorship and election fraud occurred. The authorities responded with repressions.
According to calculations by the 'Belpol' security forces association and human rights defenders, the names of at least 10,050 people who faced politically motivated criminal cases are known. In total, various political repressions (criminal cases, administrative charges, dismissals, searches, forced emigration) have affected hundreds of thousands of Belarusians.
The authorities of Belarus consider 'extremism' to be the demand for free elections with transparent vote counting, as well as virtually any criticism of the authorities, pro-Russian historical narratives, expressions of solidarity with Ukraine, and anti-war speeches.
