Shootout between SBU and HUR military personnel took place in Kyiv. There are wounded
The SBU reports an armed attack on its employees, while former HUR head Kyrylo Budanov hints at the opposite circumstances.
The shootout occurred on the morning of September 2 in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv.
According to sources of "Ukrainska Pravda", three representatives of the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine sustained injuries. The official number of casualties has not yet been named.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stated that its employees were conducting urgent investigative actions in a case of a terrorist act, which, according to the agency, was organized by the Russian FSB.
But a group of people allegedly blocked the passage of the investigative group with cars and attacked it with weapons. The special unit "Alpha" was called to the scene.
"During the suppression of armed resistance, employees used weapons. As a result of the incident, there are wounded among those who resisted. The attackers have been detained," the SBU statement said.
The agency states that the detainees serve in one of the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Their weapons and documents were seized. The Office of the Prosecutor General has launched an investigation into the threat and attempted murder of an SBU officer.
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine and former head of HUR, Kyrylo Budanov, reacted to the shootout and essentially voiced a different version of events.
"No one has the right to abduct military personnel with impunity, open fire on the streets of our cities, issue and execute criminal orders. The State Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Prosecutor General are already dealing with the situation," he stated in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
The shootout is linked to the disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander for combat operations of the "Russian Volunteer Corps", which is part of the HUR structure. The day before, the RDK stated that Kaplunov was taken by unknown persons near his home, after which contact with him was lost.
At the same time, on the morning of September 2, the SBU and HUR reported that they jointly prevented an assassination attempt prepared by the FSB on one of the leaders of the Russian opposition national movement. His name was not officially disclosed, but sources in Ukrainian media claim that it was precisely Kaplunov. Other details are not yet available.
