Changes made to physical education curriculum in Belarusian schools
Minister of Education Andrei Ivanets stated that the physical education curriculum in Belarusian schools has been adjusted. According to him, the decision is linked to remarks made by Alyaksandr Lukashenka regarding the physical fitness of graduates who go on to compulsory military service after school.
In April 2026, during a meeting between Lukashenka and the security bloc, it was noted that the physical training of some recruits did not always meet the requirements.
Therefore, instead of two full physical education lessons and one game-oriented lesson, schoolchildren will now have three full physical education lessons. During these lessons, they will also engage in game sports. The curriculum also includes elements of athletics, gymnastics, and other disciplines.
The changes have also affected physical training in universities. A new curriculum has been approved for students, in which the standards have been brought into line with the requirements for physical training in military service.
Andrei Ivanets emphasized that it is about basic physical skills, and the standards are not overly complex.
