A drone was shot down over Lithuanian territory for the first time
It could have flown in from Belarusian territory and was shot down by NATO fighters.
At midnight, a drone flew into Lithuania; an air raid alert was declared in the country, and an emergency message was sent to residents' phones.
Around 00:20, the drone was shot down by NATO fighters. Debris of the drone has been found.
"A brief summary of this night's events: around 00:00, an object flying towards Lithuania was spotted in the airspace. Around 0:20, the identified drone was shot down by allied fighters from Italy, who took off from the airbase in Šiauliai," the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported on Facebook.
The drone was shot down in the Kaunas district, approximately 90 kilometers from the border with Belarus.
The scene of the incident has been cordoned off and is being guarded; Military Police and Lithuanian Police forces are currently working there.
"We will not rush to conclusions — an investigation will be conducted to assess all circumstances. The fact is that such incidents will not become less frequent. Now the most important thing is that the threat has been neutralized and no longer poses danger to residents. We thank our allies for their prompt reaction and accurate shot," the army stated.
