One of the suspects in the attack on Leipzig airport — a man from Belarus

After the incident with an explosive drone at Leipzig airport on August 4, investigators identified two suspects.

An explosive drone was found on the night of August 5 near the southern runway of Leipzig/Halle airport — close to a Ukrainian transport plane. Specialists defused the device; no one was harmed.

During the operation, both runways of the airport were closed, and several flights were rerouted.

The identities of the two suspects were established by German investigators, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR. According to these publications, the suspects are an individual from Russia with a Latvian passport and a man from Belarus with a Russian passport. Further details about the men and their role in preparing the attack have not yet been disclosed.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrind stated on September 1 that Moscow was behind the attempted attack.

"Police investigation, the nature of the crime, and intelligence information prove Russia's responsibility for the attempted attack at Leipzig airport," he said.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe's most important air cargo hubs. It is also used for transporting military cargo and aid to Ukraine, which is why German authorities consider the incident a possible Russian hybrid operation. Russia denies its involvement.
