A new wave of forest fires has spread across various regions of mainland Greece. The situation is exacerbated by strong winds, which contribute to the rapid spread of the fire. Large-scale fire extinguishing and resident evacuation operations are underway in the country, reports Reuters.
Reportedly, after a relatively calm start to the fire season, several large outbreaks have re-emerged in Greece. A particularly difficult situation has developed in the Boeotia region, where the fire has approached coastal settlements.
Over 300 firefighters, approximately 90 fire engines, and aviation have been deployed to combat the fires. Over 200 people were evacuated by sea from Agias Vasilas beach, and another 12 people were taken from Porto Germeno beach. In the latter settlement, located near Athens, about a hundred homes have been destroyed by the fire, according to local authorities.
Greek authorities have declared an emergency level of fire risk in the Attica and Euboea regions.
Simultaneously with the fires in Greece, a difficult situation persists in France and Spain.
In southwestern France, in the Gironde department, a large fire that started on July 22 near Bordeaux and destroyed about 42 thousand hectares of forest has been localized. However, in the Var department in the south of the country, the fire intensified again: in a few hours, the flames engulfed over a thousand hectares. As a result, nearly 2500 people were evacuated overnight.
In Spain, the fight against several major outbreaks continues. A new fire broke out in the northern province of León. In neighboring Zamora, an blaze that destroyed about 11 thousand hectares has been brought under control. The fire in Castellón province, where almost 10 thousand hectares burned, was also localized after seven days of fighting.
Spanish police suspect that some fires may have been caused by deliberate arson. Two separate fire outbreaks were found in Castellón.
Large fires in the central regions of Spain — Madrid and Ávila — have been stabilized.
