The elections for Bird of the Year 2027, organized by the SPC of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Bioresources, the information resource "Smartpress" and the company "Wild Nature", have concluded, reports the Telegram channel "Wild Nature Nearby".
Participants could vote on five online platforms until August 23 inclusive for one of four candidate birds. The results from all platforms for each species were combined.
A total of 4172 votes were collected. And here are the results:
- 1st place: Bee-eater — 2165 votes.
- 2nd place: Teal duck — 946 votes.
- 3rd place: Little Tern — 533 votes.
- 4th place: Great Cormorant — 528 votes.
Thus, the Bee-eater won this year's voting by a large margin. It will replace the Bird of the Year 2026 — the Black Stork. The Bee-eater took first place on every voting platform.
The Bee-eater is a migratory bird listed in the Red Book (of endangered species). It nests in burrows and can be found throughout Belarus, but more often in the south. Its population is gradually increasing due to climate warming. The main problem is the destruction of nests in quarries, so it is important to identify such places in a timely manner and take them under protection.
The next year will pass under the wing of this beautiful bird — educational and nature conservation campaigns are ahead.
People also did not remain indifferent to other candidates. Second place went to the Teal duck — a small migratory duck whose population is rapidly declining, while drakes are still legally hunted in spring. Even the Great Cormorant, disliked by many, received hundreds of votes of support, because the bird is not to blame for nature making it an excellent fisherman. But nowhere have cormorants destroyed all the fish, as humans sometimes do.
