Two Frankfurt Airport Employees Died of Malaria. There Were Also Other Cases of the Disease

In Frankfurt am Main, six cases of malaria have been recorded since mid-July, two of which were fatal. Both deceased were airport employees. Doctors believe that people could have been infected after mosquito bites from mosquitoes that entered Germany aboard planes from regions where this disease is prevalent, writes Deutsche Welle.

The first fatality occurred in early July, but it was not initially known that malaria was the cause of death. This became clear after another airport employee died in August with the same diagnosis. This was announced on August 26 by the city health department, as well as Fraport, the company that manages the airport.

According to experts, it is tropical malaria — the most dangerous form of the disease. The second deceased, reportedly, was involved in aircraft maintenance.

Authorities believe that the infection occurred specifically through mosquito bites. Human-to-human transmission of malaria is very rare. Mainly, this is possible through blood transfusions with infected blood or through injury with an infected needle.

Following the discovery of the cases, Fraport launched a broad information campaign for its employees. Employees, especially those working with cargo, equipment, or directly on the territory between the terminal and the runways, were advised to immediately consult a doctor and report the possibility of malaria infection at the airport if fever and other flu-like symptoms appeared.

If there are doubts about the diagnosis, employees are advised to contact medical institutions specializing in tropical diseases, including the university clinic in Frankfurt am Main.

In addition, several weeks ago, special mosquito traps were installed on the airport grounds. The captured insects are sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, where they are examined to determine if they are malaria carriers and from where they might have entered Germany.

Malaria is most common in Africa, Asia, and South America. In Germany itself, approximately 500-600 imported cases of the disease are registered annually.
