US President Donald Trump said that something useful might come from CIA Director John Ratcliffe's trip to Moscow. The American leader said this during a conversation with journalists.
Trump was asked why Ratcliffe went to Russia. His visit became known on August 25.
The American president called the trip almost routine and said that he did not want to disappoint people who expect certain results from it. According to him, the US administration is very actively working to end the war in Ukraine.
"We would like the war in Ukraine to end," Trump emphasized.
CBS, an American television company, was the first to report on Ratcliffe's trip. The information emerged after a US Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III military transport aircraft and a convoy of American diplomats were spotted at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe arrived in Moscow amidst intelligence received by the American side regarding Russia's early preparatory activities for possible military mobilization.
It was also reported that Washington asked Ukraine to refrain from striking Moscow and St. Petersburg for a certain period while the CIA director's visit was ongoing.
The Kremlin stated that Ratcliffe's trip was related to contacts between Russian and American intelligence agencies.
