Hundreds of tourists missing, dozens dead after devastating landslide in Nepal

At least 22 people have died and about 400 tourists are missing in the Himalayas as a result of sudden floods and a glacier collapse.

The disaster occurred in a mountainous area near the border of Nepal and Tibet. A sudden snow-rock collapse took place there. This powerful glacier landslide formed a temporary dam, which almost immediately burst and sent a giant solid wall of water, mud, and boulders down the canyon.

Experts note that a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the area a few minutes before the collapse, which could have served as a trigger for the ice movement.

The natural disaster caught people by surprise, as there were no heavy rains in Nepal itself at that moment. The current completely destroyed infrastructure, bridges, and coastal settlements in its path.

Among the missing are about three hundred foreigners (including citizens of India, Great Britain, USA, Malaysia), as well as local residents and guides. It is not yet known whether there are any Belarusians among the missing or affected.

A large-scale rescue operation involving helicopters and the Nepalese army is currently underway in the affected regions, but the search is complicated by the risk of a repeat avalanche.
