German Magazine Issue Released with Russian Swear Word on Cover
The Berlin publication Die Tageszeitung (taz) is published only in electronic form. The cover of the September 4 issue features a panorama of Moscow with a view of the Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Ministry building, along with the phrase in Cyrillic «Гёте, идти на х**!» (Goethe, go f*** yourself!), writes Deutsche Welle.
The error in the phrase is not accidental: it's a reference to the German comedy film Fack ju Göhte, where the title is also misspelled. The film tells the story of illiterate high school students.
In the taz article about the closure of the Goethe Institute in Russia, it states that Germany's cultural presence in Russia 'has been practically non-existent for quite some time,' and will now be further curtailed.
Journalists told the story of a Muscovite named Leonid, who, due to the institute's closure, will no longer be able to study German and obtain a language certificate recognized in Germany.
