26-year-old employee of elite customs unit sentenced to 16 years on a set of political charges, including 'treason to the state'
Piotr Asipenka, who worked in the structure of forensic examinations and operational customs, was thrown behind bars for a gigantic term on political charges.
Piotr Asipenka was born on November 18, 1999, in Minsk. He graduated from Belarusian State University.
While still studying, in 2018-2019, Piotr worked part-time in the retail chain 'Santa Retail'.
Since August 2021, according to 'Cyberpartisans', he worked in the Minsk department of the State Committee of Forensic Examinations. And since August 2022, he was listed as an employee of operational customs.
This is one of the most closed and influential units in the customs system, created to combat smuggling, grey schemes, and to track down offenders not at specific border points, but throughout the entire territory of Belarus. The department is endowed with broad powers: its employees conduct operational-investigative activities, perform the functions of an inquiry body, conduct investigations, and have their own mobile special forces units for detentions.
A case was initiated against the Minsk resident immediately under three articles: Part 1 Art. 342 (active participation in actions that grossly violate public order), Part 1 Art. 368 (insulting Lukashenka), and Part 2 Art. 356 (treason to the state). The essence of the charges is unknown, but this is a set of articles commonly used to persecute people for political views and participation in demonstrations for democracy and against election falsification in 2020.
The court sentenced him to a harsh punishment — 16 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.
Moreover, Piotr is still held in the pre-trial detention center of the State Security Committee. Belarusian human rights defenders recognized Asipenka as a political prisoner.
