Auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's are preparing their autumn modern art sales. Among the lots, there are traditionally several works by Marc Chagall, with the most expensive painting by the artist from Vitebsk potentially selling for over $4 million, writes Office Life.
The painting in question is «The Peasants», which Chagall painted in 1971 when he lived in southeastern France in Saint-Paul-de-Vence with his second wife Valentina Brodskaya.
In the center of the composition, the artist depicted a loving couple. The man, however, is not looking at his beloved, but at the city's rooftops. Perhaps this is how Chagall conveyed his nostalgia for his homeland and Vitebsk.
The painting will be exhibited at Sotheby's evening sale of modern and contemporary art in Hong Kong on September 28. The upper estimate exceeds $4 million.
The current owner acquired the work in November 2018 at a Christie's auction for $1.93 million. At that time, the painting was sold significantly below the upper estimate of $2.5 million. Thus, in almost eight years, its potential auction price has more than doubled.
The authenticity of the painting has been confirmed by the Chagall Committee, and there is the artist's signature in the lower left corner.
The next day, September 29, at Sotheby's in Hong Kong, another work by Chagall, «Gladioli», created in 1950, will be sold. It is estimated up to $570,000.
Another Chagall painting, dedicated to a circus theme, will be exhibited on September 30 at Christie's sale in the same Hong Kong. Its upper estimate is around $700,000.
