Hungarian writer Péter Nádas, one of Hungary's most renowned contemporary authors, has died. He was the author of large-scale epic novels, in which he revealed the history of Central and Eastern Europe in the second half of the 20th century through the fates of individual people. Nádas was 83 years old.
Péter Nádas's death was reported by the writer's publisher on August 26, and the information later appeared on his social media.
Nádas was a journalist by profession, and as a prose writer, he debuted in 1967 with a collection of novellas and short stories. In 1977, his work "The End of a Family Story" was published, dedicated to Hungary in the first years after the establishment of the communist regime. In 2012, it was published by "Ekanompres" publishing house in Belarusian translation.
The novel "A Book of Memories" brought the writer worldwide fame. Critics compared this work to the books of Marcel Proust and Robert Musil.
In 2005, Nádas published the three-volume novel "Parallel Stories," in which he addressed the history of 20th-century Hungary.
The writer was the recipient of numerous literary awards. For many years, he was also named as one of the possible contenders for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
