"But there was no feeling that you are a beast." Seviarynets told how a common hygiene issue turns into torment in captivity.
Pavel Seviarynets in his new post shared the realities of prison life in SHIZA (punitive isolation cell) and punishment cells, where all hygiene items are forbidden: "Sometimes I tore my fingers until they bled."
Seviarynets writes that when you sit for months in concrete boxes where everything is forbidden, the problem of nail clipping turns into a serious matter.
Scissors are forbidden. Nippers are forbidden. Blades are forbidden. Razors are forbidden.
Concrete dust and dirt get under the nails. And after a month, two or three, the nails grow, imagine, really long.
And how to clip your nails? No way.
I know there are people who bite their nails. But I tried - it's not for me.
In the Akrestsin punishment cells, I got used to filing my nails against metal screws. Sometimes I tore my fingers until they bled - but at least there was no feeling that you were a beast locked in a concrete bag," Seviarynets recounts.
In the Shklov SHIZA or Hrodna covered prison, such screws could not be found, so
I had to file my nails on one or more fingers against concrete or cement between the tiles.
"This work is long and meticulous - but, as they say, you see the result," ironizes the former political prisoner.
