People — to Karaeu: «Who cares about your Dazhynki? You've bred a company of police in every village»

Chairman of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee Yury Karaeu stated: «My task for the residents of district centers and regions is to ensure that life there does not fade and people do not leave». People did not like his speech.

A few days ago, in an interview with local television, Chairman of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee Yury Karaeu reported: «I set a task for the residents of district centers, regions — to ensure that life there does not fade, so that people do not leave from there, so that living there is exactly as convenient and dignified as in big cities, like in the regional center, for example, or in Minsk. Therefore, our main efforts are now [directed] at district centers. We are preparing for «Dazhynki». Here's our next district center — Karelichy — which will welcome guests in a month. (…)

The regional executive committee's leadership has this task — to make small settlements and towns look good enough so that their external appearance doesn't need attention for a long time.»

A short video with these words appeared in the thread of the state television and radio company trk_grodno. But the words of the «general-governor» unexpectedly caused great irritation among people.

People write to Karaeu: «Did you ask the youth? Are they even interested in your Dazhynki??? You've bred a company of police in every village… What kind of development can there be in a country where the old leadership is completely detached from the youth… all you could come up with is a cop in every school to frisk students».

«We need to introduce the Karaeu standard in district centers. Sticks, wire, fences — no one will escape».

«Confiscate passports and set up checkpoints?»

«Station machine gunners».

«Normal countries: let's create attractive conditions for people to relocate. Belarus: let's assign the police the task of preventing those who flee from leaving».

Hundreds of likes were gathered by comments reminding Karaeu of his actions as Minister of Internal Affairs during the 2020 protests.

«Will you detain people with batons again?»

«Literally the person because of whom a bunch of people left».

Some gave specific examples of the implementation of regional development policies:

«Here's Lahojsk — a district center. There's a district hospital there. But people go to Baraulyany to get basic tests done, because in Lahojsk either Manyka isn't there, or Vanka didn't buy the test tubes. To buy a child's uniform for September 1st — you have to go to Expobel. There you have it, a satellite city».

«That's why doctors are being removed in Ashmyany, and no new ones are being sent. And soon, it seems, there will be no hospital in the city at all! And medicine is the first thing that should be in a city!»

You can't keep people with just beautiful facades, commentators believe, and draw attention to the material side of life in the provinces:

«People leave not because of the appearance of the settlement, but because of the impossibility of earning enough money for a decent life. Yes, today some cities have become very attractive externally, beautiful, convenient. However, people's lives haven't improved because of this; in district centers, vacancies are offered with an average salary of 850-1500 rubles. Is it really possible to live normally on this money, even in a beautiful city?»

There were also suggestions. Some users believe that the formula for success for small towns is quite simple:

«Although I'm not an official, I know three simple truths to keep people from fleeing: decent jobs, good wages, affordable housing. The advice is free, don't thank me, and there's no need to support a bunch of freeloaders in suits».

«Well, that's expensive, it's cheaper to confiscate passports», — one of the Belarusians noted.

Others are confident that qualitative changes are needed for real development:

«For people not to leave, there must be development. Develop the leisure and services sector, develop the social sector — schools, kindergartens, hospitals; develop the legislative sphere — so that laws are precise, clear, and don't change every time someone wakes up on the wrong side of the bed».

«Work, infrastructure development, schools, various events, transport links, housing on installment for 20 years, low taxes, support for birth rates. And no one will leave small towns».

And many, very many, note that economic well-being is impossible without democratization, without improving the socio-political atmosphere in the country:

«For people not to leave, repression must stop. And for them to return, the innocent must be acquitted, compensation paid, and the guilty punished».

As follows from the comments, Belarusians are not very confident that the authorities will achieve anything:

«For people not to leave, there must be a change of government in the country, not an old-age stagnation».

«Good morning! This should have been addressed 25 years ago».

«They left, are leaving, and will continue to leave, because you only know how to talk from screens. And life has long faded in Belarus».

«Very funny) a person will always go where it's specifically better for them. Where is it better now? Where one can breathe easily and freely».

«You need to work, not set tasks», — readers note.

Only a few spoke in support of the official position and objected to the criticism:

«There is work in the regions. You can get a job even without higher education, with a college degree. Accountants, lawyers, economists, HR specialists, agronomists, veterinarians, drivers, electricians, builders, and so on.

Salaries are decent, and housing is often provided. But everyone wants to live in Minsk. It's shameful to live in a district and work in an agricultural organization. Latest example: a specialist with a salary of 2,000 rubles quit, working in an agrotown, 15 minutes from the city, and went to the city for 1,000 rubles. We take targeted specialists. Starting salary around 2,000 rubles. Housing. Iŭje District».
