US evacuates diplomats and redeploys troops in the Middle East. Trump considers new strikes on Iran
The US is reducing diplomatic mission staff and relocating military personnel at Middle East bases. Similar measures were taken before the start of the war with Iran in February.
As reported by NBC News, citing sources, in recent days, the Pentagon has been quietly relocating military personnel from a number of bases in the region without public announcements. This affects facilities in Jordan, Qatar, and Kuwait. Exactly where the personnel are being moved and their number is not disclosed.
At the same time, the State Department has ordered a reduction in staff at several diplomatic missions. From Saudi Arabia, personnel whose presence is not essential, and their family members, are required to depart. The embassy will continue operations with a reduced staff.
These movements are occurring amid discussions of a new operation against Iran. According to NBC, military leadership is presenting Trump with possible strike options. One idea is a short campaign that, combined with economic pressure, would compel Tehran to enter negotiations and open the Strait of Hormuz.
An ABC News source noted that the current troop movement is similar to what occurred before the start of the war in February.
However, the evacuation of diplomats cannot be unequivocally considered preparation for a strike on Iran. According to American officials cited by ABC, the departure of personnel from Saudi Arabia is linked to a threat from the Houthis. This Iran-backed group attacks Saudi military and oil facilities, as well as civilian airports.
Officials also link smaller staff reductions at other embassies to the Houthi threat and other circumstances which, they say, are not related to a possible new operation against Iran.
US Central Command declined to disclose details of troop movements, citing operational security.
According to NBC, there is no consensus within Trump's inner circle regarding new strikes: Pete Hegseth advocates resuming operations, while other officials are wary of starting a campaign without a clear understanding of how to conclude it.
As early as October 8, Trump publicly promised not to attack Iran before the midterm congressional elections scheduled for November 3. Now, according to NBC sources, options for action are being discussed both before and after the elections.
