Rescue teams searched for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-China border after a catastrophic and deadly flow of water and mud swept through several settlements the day before following a glacier collapse, writes AP.
Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 826 people are considered missing, and the death toll from the flash floods in the country rose to 165 on Thursday. Nepalese authorities intensified rescue efforts in the most affected areas of Nuwakot and Rasuwa.
Chinese state TV channel CCTV separately reported that 260 of the 558 missing in Tibet are foreigners, and two local residents were rescued. According to its data, at least three people died by Thursday morning.
The disaster in Nepal and Tibet is not an isolated incident. The Lhende-Khola river system has already burst its banks twice in just 14 months, and the increasingly unstable Himalayan glacial system threatens settlements, infrastructure, and water supplies in one of the world's most densely populated regions.
