In Vitebsk, former university rector to be tried for unusual crime — he invented students

For almost three years, the university enrolled applicants who did not study there. According to the investigation, the university management thus tried to show compliance with the state order and hide the failure in recruiting for state-funded places. In total, almost one hundred people were fictitiously registered.

In the Vitebsk region, the former head of one of Vitebsk's universities will be tried. According to the prosecution, for several years he fictitiously enrolled applicants in state-funded places to conceal real problems with student recruitment.

As the investigation claims, from July 2020 to September 2023, the former rector of a "leading agricultural university," who simultaneously headed the admissions committee, gave illegal orders to his subordinates — to enroll students only on paper.

The goal, according to the investigation, was "imaginary fulfillment of admission targets" and concealing the true situation with the recruitment of applicants for full-time state-funded education.

The scheme, according to the case materials, was simple: employees were ordered to submit documents of individuals to the admissions committee, register them, and enter knowingly false information about their admission and enrollment in the first year into official documents.

At the same time, these applicants never actually came to the university. Later, the fictitiously enrolled individuals were simply expelled.

Thus, no less than 95 people were fictitiously enrolled in full-time state-funded education, including within the framework of targeted training.

The prosecutor's office believes that these actions had serious consequences: state statistics were distorted, the fulfillment of the state order for personnel training for the agro-industrial complex was disrupted, which further exacerbated the shortage of specialists.

The former head of the university is accused of abuse of official power.

Meanwhile, the former rector remained free on personal recognizance.

The university where this occurred is not named; it is only stated that it is a leading university in the field of agriculture. In Vitebsk, there is only one university that matches this description — the Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine.

From 2016 to 2024, its rector was Mikola Haurychenka, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences.
