Yaroslavl Resident Sentenced to 14 Years in Penal Colony for Photographing Graves of Russian Servicemen. This Was Assessed as Treason

On September 8, the Yaroslavl Regional Court sentenced 48-year-old Nikolai Shcherbakov to 14 years in a penal colony in a treason case, local publication 7x7 reports .

According to the court's version, starting from October 2024, the man transferred photos and videos of servicemen's graves at a memorial cemetery to Ukrainian special services.

The case was reviewed in just one month. Judging by the photo published by the court's press service, Shcherbakov was arrested in winter. It is not reported whether he pleaded guilty.

This is the first known case when a verdict for photographing servicemen's graves in Russia was handed down under the article on state treason.

In June, FSB officers detained several residents of the Tomsk region in a similar case. Also in June, two girls were detained in Yekaterinburg for photographing servicemen's graves. After this, a sign appeared in one of the city's elite cemeteries, warning of possible liability for photographing the graves of participants in the war against Ukraine.
