Bialiatski: For now, I don't advise others to follow Pachobut's example
Nobel Peace Prize laureate, former political prisoner Ales Bialiatski reacted to Andrei Pachobut's heroic return to Belarus. While acknowledging his deed, he at the same time warns others against attempts to follow the path of this former political prisoner right now.
"September 8. Andrzej Pachobut returned to Belarus. This indicates that he is a brave person and ready to take risks to achieve his goals.
Does this mean that the situation has changed and a thaw has come to Belarus? No. In the 1930s, writers, including Belarusian ones, were taken to the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, which was built by political prisoners, to show how work re-educates 'criminals'. Soon, some of them also ended up in other Gulag new constructions.
I do not advise other political refugees to repeat what Andrzej did, so that they do not later blame themselves for their gullibility while sitting in a penal colony. I would like to do that too. But a new criminal case was opened a month ago. I will have to wait a little longer," writes Bialiatski on Facebook.
