Works by Ossip Zadkine acquired by Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk for the first time
The collection of the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk has been enriched for the first time with three graphic works by the renowned 20th-century sculptor and graphic artist Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967). This was announced by the museum's director, Iryna Voranava, writes BelTA.
Ossip Zadkine was born in Vitebsk. During his studies at the city's four-grade school, he spent two years in the same class as Marc Chagall. His teacher was the well-known Vitebsk artist Yury Pen. Like Chagall, Zadkine later lived in Paris' "La Ruche" (The Beehive) — a famous artists' commune, where he became acquainted with the ideas of avant-garde art.
Zadkine became known primarily as a sculptor. His monumental works are found in major cities across various countries, and his Cubist and post-Cubist sculptures are preserved in leading museums worldwide. Additionally, the artist worked extensively in easel and printmaking graphics.
Two of his lithographs and one linocut engraving have been acquired by the Vitebsk museum. The 1960 lithograph "Cretan Bull" is part of the "Labours of Hercules" series. It was printed on smooth, thick vellum paper in an edition of 350 copies by a German publisher in Cologne. The museum received the 104th impression with the artist's pencil signature.
The second lithograph is "Acrobat," created in 1965. It was also printed on vellum paper, but its edition was 150 copies. The Marc Chagall Museum's collection received the 135th impression, also with the artist's signature.
The linocut "Untitled" dates back to 1938. Zadkine created it for the art magazine "XXe Siècle" (20th Century). The work bears the artist's initials, applied directly to the printing plate.
According to Iryna Voranava, all three works arrived at the museum in good condition and require almost no restoration. They are currently undergoing the necessary documentation process, after which they are planned to be displayed in temporary exhibitions at the Marc Chagall Art Center.
The museum director noted that these are the first works by Zadkine in the institution's collection. His legacy is not widely represented in Belarus, which is why the museum considers it a great fortune to be able to preserve these rare graphic works by their famous compatriot. The three works by Zadkine were donated to the museum by a friend and patron who wished to remain anonymous.
