The video caused outrage on social media. Now the police are conducting an investigation.
The incident occurred on September 5 during the "Fast Paws" competition, which took place before the Minsk Half Marathon. According to the event's rules, the owner and dog were supposed to run 100 meters together.
However, after the starting signal, the 71-year-old participant ran, but the frightened spitz remained in place. The man dragged the dog on its leash across the surface for several tens of meters — it seemed the dog wasn't touching the ground.
The video was initially published on the Minsk Half Marathon's Instagram account as a joke. However, after outrage in the comments, the post was deleted, but the recording had already spread across social networks.
The police found the dog's owner and took his statement. The man assured that the spitz did not sustain injuries, eats well, and remains cheerful. He explained the incident as follows: the spitz got scared by the sudden starting signal and didn't run, and the man himself didn't notice that the dog didn't want to run.
«I already ran, and he stayed behind. I simply didn't see that he didn't really want to run, that he was braking. But this was only in the first half of the distance. In the second half, he already understood what was required of him and ran after me,» — said the runner.
Whether the man will be punished for animal cruelty, the police did not report.
