Trump stated that the USA might conclude a peace agreement with Iran
Representatives of the two countries met for the first time since June.
US President Donald Trump, speaking on Tuesday at the UN General Assembly session, said that, in his opinion, the United States would sign a peace agreement with Iran after the US congressional midterm elections, which will take place on November 3, writes the BBC.
In addition to Iran, Trump's speech touched upon the war in Ukraine, the fate of Cuba, and a new agreement on Greenland, and he also proposed renaming artificial intelligence.
“I think we'll make a deal [with Iran] right after the election, because there's no reason for them not to make it. They're waiting to see how I do in the midterm elections,” Trump said.
Tehran did not comment on Trump's statement, but the American leader himself said after his speech that US and Iranian officials met in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session for the first time in several months (as Financial Times clarifies, since late June).
Washington was represented at the meeting by Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Tehran by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Negotiations were conducted through intermediaries, as had been the case before.
“Today, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, we held lengthy talks with the Iranian delegation through representatives who shuttled between the sides throughout the day. A round of discussions was successfully concluded, which we hope will prove constructive and promising. The intermediaries will continue their work,” Witkoff later wrote on the social network X.
In his speech from the UN rostrum, Donald Trump stated that he would have to make an important decision: to destroy Iran or to conclude an agreement with it.
“I will have to make a big decision. Will a deal be made with Iran that will allow it to rebuild the country and make it much greater than it ever was,” the US President said, “or should I destroy the Islamic Republic and do it quickly so they can no longer kill people and destroy countries?”
“Or cause them hell with no chance of survival, no hope for a great future and future generations? But I think we will conclude a deal right after the elections,” Trump continued.
Trump called on other countries to support pressure on Iran, and once again stated that the US, by starting a war against Iran, prevented it from creating nuclear weapons.
Iran, while developing its nuclear program, has consistently assured that it is peaceful in nature and that the country has no intention of creating nuclear weapons.
New promise of peace in Ukraine
Touching upon the topic of Russia's war against Ukraine, Donald Trump again promised quick peace, but this time did not specify a timeframe.
“We are working very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will do it. It [a peace agreement] will happen, I think, sooner than many people think,” Trump said.
The US President also recalled the "hellish sanctions" bill he signed on Friday.
“Last week, in memory of Senator Lindsey Graham, I signed a powerful new law passed by Congress, which gives me immense new powers regarding tariffs — and, if necessary, I will use them [...] It's time to stop the bloodshed,” Trump said.
Cuba — change of power
Touching upon the topic of Cuba, Trump said that his administration is seeking the overthrow of the communist regime on the island.
“My administration is seeking fundamental changes in the situation in Cuba, whose communist regime is under great pressure — the greatest pressure it has ever been under. It is a completely failed state, it is failing like never before, and it will fall,” the US President stated.
“Communism will never come to America, but freedom will come to Cuba,” Reuters quoted Trump as saying.
The Cuban delegation left the hall during Trump's speech.
