Viachorka: Tsikhanouskaya discussed with Cowl the option of amnesty, under which no new cases are opened and past ones are closed

Commenting on the return of former political prisoner Andrzej Poczobut to Belarus, Tsikhanouskaya's advisor Franak Viachorka emphasizes in a conversation with DW Belarus that this is an important precedent, but for now an exception to the rules.
He noted that it is important for Belarusians to have guarantees of a safe return to their homeland. One of them could be a general political amnesty.
"We propose, as part of a potential de-escalation, that a general political amnesty be declared, like in Venezuela. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya discussed with John Cowl an option for amnesty where no new cases are opened, past cases are closed, and cases of those who have already served time are rehabilitated or at least closed.
Currently, people travel to Belarus often without knowing if there are criminal cases against them. The regime conceals this information. But if there is a general amnesty and a suspension of the opening of any cases, everyone will feel it. This could create conditions for people to gradually return. This is our goal, our task, which we are pursuing and discussing, including with Americans and Europeans. We say that sanctions cannot be lifted until we see systemic changes," says Franak Viachorka.
