A Mi-8 helicopter with employees of Russian state TV channels and a representative of the election commission suddenly began to lose altitude while approaching an airfield in Sakhalin. The pilot landed the machine on the road, after which it veered into a ditch.
The helicopter was returning from Cape Terpeniya, where a representative of the election commission was overseeing early voting for residents of hard-to-reach territories in the Russian State Duma elections, according to Russian channels.
Eight people were on board: three crew members, an employee of the Sakhalin Oblast Election Commission, and four correspondents from state TV channels.
While approaching the "Sokol" airfield, the helicopter began to rapidly lose altitude. The pilot managed to land it on the highway approximately one kilometer from the airfield. After landing, the machine veered into a ditch.
Passengers and crew members sustained bruises and scratches. No one on the road was injured.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia provided the helicopter for organizing voting in remote areas.
