This salad caused a large-scale outbreak of severe diarrhea in the USA
Iceberg lettuce served at the large fast-food chain Taco Bell proved to be dangerous to health. According to US health authorities, it caused an outbreak of the parasitic disease cyclosporiasis in five states.
The parasite is called Cyclospora cayetanensis and causes severe diarrhea, writes Bild.
It is considered proven that Taco Bell salad was the cause of mass diarrhea in the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
The fast-food chain is supplied with produce by Taylor Fresh Foods from Salinas, California. The supplier acknowledged that tests by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "point to a specific independent agricultural enterprise" associated with the company.
Although the statement noted that the company was "deeply concerned" about the fate of those who fell ill, this is not the first major diarrhea outbreak linked to Taylor Fresh Foods.
In addition to salads and mangoes, onions at McDonald's also proved to be contaminated in 2024: at that time, one person died due to the spread of E. coli in 14 states.
Meanwhile, Taco Bell has promised to temporarily stop using greens from this supplier from Mexico.
The situation has taken on serious proportions: in Michigan alone, which became the epicenter of the outbreak, more than five thousand cases of illness have been registered. More than a hundred people had to be hospitalized.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is generally not transmitted from person to person but is spread through food or water and affects the small intestine.
Outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in the USA most often occur in the summer.
