On the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, a group of migrants emerged from a tunnel and attacked border guards. This was kept silent in Lithuania for over a week

As reported, border guards discovered an illegally dug tunnel and began detaining several people who were trying to enter Lithuania. At that moment, about 20 more people emerged from the tunnel, who, it is alleged, attacked four border guards, using sticks and stones.

This incident only became known several days after it occurred, which caused outrage among Lithuanian authorities. Vilma Danovskienė, a member of the Lazdijai district council, reported the incident on social media and demanded explanations from the border guard service leadership.

According to her, questions arise as to why four border guards were sent against a much larger group of people who might have been armed with sticks and stones.

The border guard service did not confirm or deny all details, citing that a pre-trial investigation is underway. In particular, it is not reported whether the migrants managed to enter Lithuanian territory and whether any special means, such as handcuffs, were lost by security forces during the clash.

After the information became public, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that he considers it unacceptable that a serious incident only became known through social media. He reported that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Martynas Katelinas, told him about the incident only after the government meeting.

“It is necessary to find out why we are only now learning about the events of July 26, and also to assess the actions of officials. I hope they fulfilled their duties, but the situation with the failure to transmit information raises questions,” said the Prime Minister.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Lithuania initiated an official inspection regarding the actions of the border guard service leadership. He stated that he had previously only received general information about the cessation of tunnel construction, but was unaware of the clash with migrants.

According to him, the head of the border guard service, Rustam Liubajev, admitted that the responsibility for the insufficient assessment of the incident's importance and the failure to inform the minister lies with the service's leadership. Liubajev himself stated that he would cooperate with the inspection and provide all necessary information. He noted that the border guards were not injured, and there was no border breach.

The head of the border guard service also said that the initial information might have been incomplete. According to his version, the migrants did not comply with the lawful demands of the border guards, after which special means might have been used.

According to the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania, 12 cases of attempts to enter Lithuania through underground passages have already been recorded in 2026.
