The result of the last match for reaching the World Cup quarter-finals was decided by a penalty shootout
In the 1/8 finals of the World Championship, the Swiss national team defeated Colombia in a penalty shootout after a 0:0 draw in regular and extra time.
The match in Vancouver turned out to be very closed and cautious. Both teams created few dangerous chances, and the game mostly took place in the center of the field. In the first half, the goalkeepers dealt with rare shots, and after the break, attacking activity was also low.
Colombia lacked striker Jhon Córdoba, who did not play in this match. Without him, the team looked less sharp in attack. The Colombians created their most dangerous moment in extra time, when, after a corner kick, Jhon Lucumí headed the ball against the crossbar.
Switzerland mostly defended and hoped to reach a penalty shootout. Towards the end of extra time, Zeki Amdouni had a good chance, but goalkeeper Camilo Vargas saved Colombia.
In the penalty shootout, the key moment was the miss by Colombian Davinson Sánchez, who hit the crossbar. Later, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved a shot from Juan Hernández. As a result, the Swiss won 4:3 and advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Argentina.
