The 38-year-old Argentine footballer Lionel Messi scored his 17th goal in the World Cup finals match against the Austrian national team, setting an absolute record for this indicator. He is now the sole top scorer in World Cups.

The current World Cup is already the sixth in Lionel Messi's phenomenal career; he previously participated in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups. During this time, he has played in 28 matches and scored 17 goals. Four of them were in this championship; previously, the star forward scored a hat-trick in the opening match against Algeria.
