You haven't seen Minsk like this — it's been planted with "lavender". How do you like it?
This season, Minsk has dressed itself in light shades of lilac, purple, and lavender here and there. It seems as if lavender has been massively planted in the city. Onliner photographed the beauty and found out from "Minskzelenstroi" what it is.
Plants with luxurious inflorescences have been found in many locations in Minsk: at least they can be seen near Gorky Park and Loshitsky Park, near the circus and the National Library, in the area of Kalinovsky Street, in Lakeside Park near "Severny Bereg". There are other places where such blooming has been observed.
— The city mainly has woodland sage and catmint planted. These are two plants that are very similar to lavender, — said Alena Karotkina, Deputy General Director for landscaping and maintenance of green economy facilities at "Minskzelenstroi". — But lavender itself is planted in only a few places in Minsk: near the Opera House and "Olympic Park".
The plants were planted in 2023, the interlocutor clarifies, and with each year, the city flowerbeds will look more and more magnificent.
— This is a perennial plant that grows, and it will become more and more abundant year after year. Many people notice it, yes. They think it's lavender. But it is a more capricious plant, it blooms late, plus it has a tendency to degenerate: if it grows in one place for a long time, the lower shoots become woody and covered with bark.
But catmint and woodland sage are more convenient for city streets. For example, due to their prolonged blooming period.
— They begin to bloom in early June and continue until the frosts. One batch finishes blooming — we cut them, the plants put out new shoots and bloom again.
Non-specialists can distinguish all three plants perhaps only by their scent. Everyone knows the smell of lavender, sage has a slightly pungent smell, and catmint has a lemony or minty scent, botanical guides suggest.
