The interval between the tremors was less than one minute. The earthquake occurred approximately 160 km from Caracas, Reuters reports, citing data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the latest information, 32 people have died and about 700 were injured, Rodriguez stated on local television.
"Dozens of buildings have collapsed, and now we are conducting very intensive rescue operations to save as many lives as God allows us to save," she said.
USGS initially estimated a 39% probability that the number of earthquake casualties would range from 1,000 to 10,000 people, and a 37% probability that it would reach between 10,000 and 100,000 people.
