Argentina defeated Algeria 3:0 at the World Cup, and Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick, becoming the best scorer in the history of World Cups, equaling Miroslav Klose's record.
"Yes, I cried after the first goal... but it was something completely unrelated to football. I had difficult days, but I am grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side and gave me strength," Messi said.
The 38-year-old forward scored goals in the 17th minute after an assist from Rodrigo de Paul, and in the 60th and 76th minutes.
Messi could have scored a poker, but his goal in the 5th minute was disallowed due to offside.
Messi caught up with former Germany national team forward Miroslav Klose in the number of goals at World Cups — the player now has 16 goals, which is a repetition of the historic record for the number of goals scored in World Championships.
Kylian Mbappé, who scored a brace yesterday, has 14 goals. Neymar and Harry Kane, who are participating in the World Cup, each have eight goals. Today Kane's England will play Croatia.
Argentina's next match will be against Austria on June 22.
Today Portugal plays DR Congo (20:00), but Cristiano Ronaldo has eight goals at World Cups.
