The wave of solidarity after the events of 2020 and support for Belarusian volunteers after the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine have become a trap for Belarusians, which security forces are still using to this day, states "Viasna".
For monetary transfers to solidarity funds and other initiatives recognized by the authorities as "extremist" and "terrorist," at least 159 people have already been convicted in Belarus, including 26 IT specialists and 33 women.
As many as 44 people have been convicted in Belarus for donations in support of Ukraine.
46 political prisoners convicted for donations have been pardoned.
However, hundreds more Belarusians, under threat of criminal charges, were forced to "buy their way out" with extra-procedural donations amounting to multiple times the original sum. At the same time, those who face trial are handed down harsh real sentences — up to 9.5 years in a penal colony.
