Belarusians owe banks more than 31 billion rubles, National Bank Deputy Chairwoman Ilona Liadnitskaya said in an interview with 'Bankauski Vesnik' (Banking Herald), Office Life reports .

As of June 1, 2026, the population's debt on loans amounted to 31.1 billion rubles. Since the beginning of the year, it has grown by 1.3 billion rubles. During this period, banks concluded about 750 thousand loan agreements.
However, the level of overdue debt remains low. According to the National Bank, the share of non-performing loans is less than 0.2% of all loans and about 0.4% of consumer loans.
The average debt burden indicator for consumer loans has remained at 27-28% for several years. For comparison, the threshold value is 40%.
The National Bank notes that banks can issue loans even with a higher debt burden, but their share should not exceed 10% of the loan portfolio. Currently, such loans account for about 7-8%.
According to Ilona Liadnitskaya, the current level of household indebtedness does not pose a threat to the country's financial stability.
The debt burden indicator is defined as the ratio of monthly loan payments to a person's average monthly income.
Since the end of 2025, new rules for calculating this indicator have been in effect in Belarus: banks are obliged to take into account information about all client loans from the Credit Registry.
