Yesterday, June 18, a meeting took place between the head of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, and former opposition deputy Dinorah Figuera, who had returned to Caracas the day before after eight years in exile, writes Telesurtv.net.
In an official statement published by Rodriguez, it is stated that the meeting is intended to conduct political dialogue.
"At this meeting, a joint technical-political committee was appointed, whose agenda includes specific stages and deadlines that contribute to the strengthening of democracy, the consolidation of peace, and the building of future well-being and prosperity for Venezuelans,” Jorge Rodriguez’s statement reads.
According to the US State Department, the meeting's agenda was political dialogue on a democratic transition.
This agenda includes the restoration of Venezuela's democratic institutions, the strengthening of the National Political Forum, the restoration of credible guarantees for political participation, and the assurance of fundamental civil liberties for open political dialogue.
The US State Department also considers this "a first step in what will be a thoughtful process to create a free and open Venezuelan society."
Jorge Rodriguez is the brother of the country's interim president Delcy Rodriguez, who came to power after US special forces abducted Nicolás Maduro on January 3.
65-year-old Figuera, a member of the "Justice First" party, headed the National Assembly in 2015 and left the country in 2018, according to the US, due to "threats and persecution." After returning, she distanced herself from opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, who recently put forward her own initiative for such negotiations.
