US Vice President J.D. Vance has noticeably lost weight after switching to a diet of sauerkraut and fermented vegetables. Other allies of Donald Trump have also embraced this regimen. For example, Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claims to have lost about 9 kilograms in the first month of such eating. Who is behind the new fashion in the American administration and whether it has captivated Trump, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The ideological inspirer of the new diet is Dr. Sean O’Mara. His popularity among politicians is no accident: O’Mara began working with the political elite during George W. Bush's presidency, when he was part of the group of doctors serving the White House.
Today, the doctor runs a private practice and specializes in comprehensive full-body MRI scans. This allows for precise detection of visceral fat — the fat that accumulates around internal organs and increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome.

The essence of the diet is quite simple: fermented foods, primarily sauerkraut and kimchi, as well as meat from grass-fed animals. It is necessary to avoid alcohol and high-sugar products. For snacks, O’Mara recommends so-called "old European cheeses" — blue cheese, Gorgonzola, or Parmesan.
According to O’Mara, precisely such a diet contributes to the reduction of dangerous fat deposits and the improvement of gut microbiome. As WSJ writes, the doctor particularly enjoys working with elderly patients, as he believes that the results of such changes are most noticeable in them.
Among officials, 72-year-old Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was the first to adopt the new diet about a year ago. He states that he lost approximately 9 kilograms in the first 30 days. According to Kennedy, the change in diet not only helped him lose weight but also relieved body aches and stopped episodes of atrial fibrillation from which he previously suffered.

However, as WSJ notes, Kennedy does not always enjoy the taste of sauerkraut itself. Nevertheless, he takes the diet so seriously that he constantly carries supplies of fermented vegetables with him.
His wife, actress Cheryl Hines, recounted that her husband wakes up at 6:30 AM to prepare himself a steak and eat a serving of sauerkraut. Once he even asked her to put a bag of cabbage in her expensive designer handbag before going out, but she flatly refused.

41-year-old J.D. Vance adopted the new eating rules during last Lent and has adhered to them ever since. As WSJ points out, social media users have already noticed that the Vice President looks significantly slimmer.
His typical diet consists of eggs, sauerkraut, pickles, berries (raspberries and blackberries), as well as beef or lamb. Even when Vance orders a hamburger, he usually eats it without the bun, adding fermented vegetables instead.
64-year-old Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and 54-year-old Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy also joined the group of diet adherents. Lutnick had long avoided red meat, fearing the risk of cancer, but changed his views after a conversation with Kennedy. He also gave up diet soda, replacing it with cold black coffee. In addition, according to WSJ, Lutnick began fermenting vegetables at home instead of buying ready-made sauerkraut.
Another follower of O’Mara was former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. He recalled noticing Sean Duffy's unusually good skin, after which Duffy advised him to consult a specialist. McCarthy remembers the doctor calling his condition the "worst case" in his practice but assured him of great potential. As a result, McCarthy has already lost more than 10 centimeters from his waist.

Dr. O’Mara's services are not cheap. According to information on his website, basic "health optimization" programs start at $8,000, and a personal consultation costs $18,000.
For this money, the doctor can even accompany a client on a shopping trip, teaching them how to choose healthy products. For example, he advises picking fermented vegetables from deep within refrigerator shelves, where light, which can destroy live microorganisms, does not reach.
Donald Trump himself remains outside this wellness movement for now. As WSJ writes, the US President still prefers pizza, french fries, diet cola, and well-done steaks with ketchup.
Nevertheless, the influence of the "cabbage diet" has already extended beyond private hobbies. As the author notes, in the new government dietary guidelines, presented by Robert Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins last year, an official recommendation to consume fermented foods, including sauerkraut, appeared for the first time.
