New Grape Varieties Suitable for the Belarusian Climate Demonstrated Near Minsk
The traditional Grape Day took place in Samokhvalovichi, Minsk district. Scientists presented two new Belarusian varieties there, and grape growers from various regions of the country brought their harvests from their plots. Visitors could taste different varieties and choose seedlings for their own garden, writes the publication pristalica.by.
At the Fruit Growing Institute, located in Samokhvalovichi, new technical varieties — "Lared" and "Muscat Minsk" — were presented. They are specially created for processing and winemaking and are adapted to Belarusian conditions.
According to experts, the plants are able to withstand frosts down to minus 30 degrees Celsius and still yield a harvest. The berries accumulate a sufficient amount of sugar for wine production, and "Muscat Minsk" has a characteristic muscat flavor.
These are the first Belarusian varieties that breeders created specifically for winemaking. It can take about 12-15 years to develop one new variety.
The ampelographic collection of the Fruit Growing Institute contains more than 600 grape varieties. More than 50 of them are grown in open ground. Among the technical varieties intended for winemaking, visitors were shown "Marechal Foch", "Marquette", "Krystal", and "Solaris".
Grape growing enthusiasts from Orsha, Lida, Novopolotsk, and other regions brought their harvests to the exhibition. Before purchasing a seedling, people not only examined and tasted the berries but also inquired about ripening times, winter hardiness, and the yield of the varieties.
For example, the family of Lyubov and Eduard from the village of Yukhnovka near Minsk already grows more than 20 varieties. This year they plan to bring home about nine more new ones. Among them is "Nadezhda Rannyaya" (Early Hope), which they chose for its early ripening and the possibility of growing it without a greenhouse. Grape growers also highly rate the varieties "Yubiley Novocherkasska" (Novocherkassk Anniversary) and "Rozovy Nil" (Pink Nile).
Belarusian grape growers note that when choosing a variety, not only the size and beauty of the clusters are important, but primarily stability, unpretentiousness, and the ability to grow well specifically in the Belarusian climate. Interest in viticulture in the country began to grow especially actively in the 2000s when associations of enthusiasts of this culture appeared.
