Pattaya — one of the centers of nightlife — is preparing for a huge influx of visitors: after more than 250 days at sea, the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has docked in Laem Chabang port. On board are about five thousand sailors and marines, writes Bild.
At the end of 2025, the Abraham Lincoln departed into the Pacific Ocean on a planned deployment. However, due to the war with Iran, the nuclear aircraft carrier was redeployed to the Middle East and remained there significantly longer than planned.
American publications reported extreme psychological stress and supply disruptions on board, malfunctioning restrooms, and alleged suicide attempts.
The U.S. Navy acknowledged the challenging conditions but emphasized that the crew received sufficient support.
Now, the troops are heading to Pattaya — a notorious Thai resort on the Gulf of Siam. The city is known worldwide for its nightlife and has been considered a symbol of sex tourism in Southeast Asia for decades.
During the Vietnam War, starting in the mid-1960s, thousands of American servicemen came here for R&R. From a former fishing village, an international entertainment center grew in just a few years.
Local businesses are now placing great hopes on the American visit. Hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops expect a significant increase in revenue. According to local authorities, the sailors will spend several days in Pattaya before the aircraft carrier continues its journey to the United States.
Pattaya city administration and police are preparing: American troops must disembark in small groups to make the process easier to control. They are also prohibited from certain recreational activities, such as marijuana use (which is now partially permitted in Thailand) and risky water sports.
