Smalyavichy city center flooded. Utility workers blame wet wipes

Residents of Smalyavichy have been observing the work of utility services' special equipment in the city center for the second day. After a recent serious blockage on Kamsamolskaya Street, a new accident occurred, as a result of which sewage flowed into the basements of the city's House of Culture and the nearby kindergarten, writes Smolevichi24.by.

Yauhen Mikalaeu, director of Smalyavichy Vodokanal (water utility), said that they started to eliminate the new blockage in the afternoon of September 9. The enterprise's employees worked until 11 PM and continued operations on the morning of September 10.

The cause of the accident was large blockages of wet wipes and rags that people flush down toilets. They blocked the sewage collector, after which the sewage began to overflow into basement premises.

Utility workers have already cleared almost half a kilometer of sewage networks. A hydrodynamic machine, which flushes pipes under high pressure, and a powerful vacuum machine were used to eliminate the blockage. A significant portion of the debris, however, has to be removed manually.

In just one evening, workers removed about 10 buckets of debris from the manhole. In total, more than 200 kilograms of compacted wipes and rags have already been removed, but the manhole still remains full.

If the blockage cannot be cleared, utility workers may need to dig up the entire area in the city center. The collectors there are located at a depth of about five meters, and there is quicksand in the soil. Laying one collector could require an excavation pit at least six meters wide. Such work would be difficult and expensive, and it could take at least a month to complete.

The director of the water utility urged residents not to flush wet wipes, wet toilet paper, hygiene products, diapers, rags, and food scraps down toilets. These items do not dissolve in water, accumulate in pipes, can damage pumps, and lead to flooding of basements of homes and various institutions.

Residents are advised to place a regular trash can in the toilet and dispose of such waste in it, rather than in the sewer.
