Girl changed her name on the second attempt: "Parents still haven't accepted it"

The other day, a Belarusian woman shared a photo of her "long-awaited document" on Threads. It was a name change certificate. No drastic changes occurred: the girl's name was Veronika, and she became Vera. Nevertheless, this event was very significant for her. She only managed to officially change her name on the second attempt, writes Onliner.by.

According to the heroine, she didn't like her birth name since childhood. Sometimes, instead of Veronika, her parents affectionately called her Verochka – and she liked that option more. After 20 years, the girl wanted everyone to always call her exactly that.

— When I got a job as an administrator at a children's center, I asked everyone to call me Vera, and it resonated with me so much! I seemed to change both externally and internally, I felt so comfortable. And hardly anyone called me Veronika anymore. Usually, when I went somewhere new, I introduced myself as Vera.

There was one minor detail left: in her passport, Vera was still Veronika. And last year, the girl seriously considered changing it. With a package of documents, the Belarusian woman went to the local ZAGS (Registry Office) in the urban settlement of Sharkovshchina.

— To change a name, you need a passport, a birth certificate, and at that time, I already had a marriage certificate. I had to write an application and state the reason for the name change. I also attached a humorous diploma from a corporate event where I was listed as Vera. But there was no stamp, so the first time I was refused.

The second time, I brought a diploma for completing event manager courses from an active organization with a stamp. In general, you can attach any document or newspaper clipping that confirms you are called by a different name.

— What reason did you state in the application?

— I wrote that Vera sounds more aesthetically pleasing and that I like it more.

The documents were reviewed for about a month. First, the girl received a written response from the Department of Justice agreeing to the name change.

— Then I had to go back to the office. They made me a new birth certificate, a name change certificate, and a new marriage certificate. And only after that will I change my passport. I know that my husband will also have to change his passport now. Regarding my parents, I can't say, I haven't clarified yet. Of the mandatory expenses: so far I have paid 135 rubles for everything.

— How did your relatives react to this?

— My parents haven't accepted it. There haven't been serious conflicts, but with them, the same conversations repeat every day: "Why did you decide to do this? You have a beautiful name." It's just that my grandmother named me Veronika, and I was also baptized with that name. So for them, it's something sacred.

— And what do you tell your loved ones?

— I answer that it's my choice and I make the decision here myself. I'm an adult, I'm 25 years old. Mom more or less accepts it all, calls me Vera, but dad doesn't. It's unusual for him. I also have a brother, he's 19, and he also doesn't accept the new name. But now I fundamentally want to live with the new name.
