Air raid alarms sounded and NATO fighters scrambled in Romania, Estonia, and Latvia due to drones

On the night of August 31 to September 1, several NATO countries — Romania, Latvia, and Estonia — simultaneously declared air raid alarms and scrambled military aircraft due to threats in their airspace.

In Romania, the overnight incidents were linked to a Russian attack on the south of Ukraine's Odesa region. Around 23:30, radar systems detected two aerial targets 24 km from Vylkove. Two Spanish F-18 fighters and a Romanian Air Force helicopter were scrambled. Pilots observed explosions on Ukrainian territory, but no violations of the Romanian border were recorded.

Around 2:00, an air raid alarm was declared in Latvia's Ludza district, and closer to 4:00 — in Alūksne district. Latvian military officials reported that a drone that had flown into their territory subsequently headed towards Estonia.

Estonian Defence Forces declared a threat to residents of 8 counties. Turkish fighters from a NATO mission were scrambled to intercept drones that were moving along the eastern border and entering Estonian airspace. Around 6:00, the alarm was called off.

Amidst these incidents, the Baltic region countries plan to create a joint operational group for drone defense and countering hybrid attacks. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas noted that there is no immediate threat of military expansion into the Baltic states yet, but Russia continues its hybrid pressure on Europe.
