Facsimile Edition of Yakub Kolas's Linguistic Work Presented
The Altiora Publishing House, commissioned by and in cooperation with the Yakub Kolas Museum, prepared and published a facsimile edition of Konstantin Mitskevich's (Yakub Kolas's) book "Methodology of the Native Language," which was first published in 1926, reports the Bellit.info website.
The book, which is part of Belarusian cultural and linguistic heritage, was presented at the poet's museum. According to Vasilina Mitskevich, the chief custodian of the museum's funds and great-granddaughter of the classic of Belarusian literature, it took two months to reproduce the book exactly as the author held it.
“The original edition was almost a hundred years old, so working with it required special care. The pages had natural traces of time: darkening, unevenness, minor defects, peculiarities of old printing. We recognized the text and carefully checked it,” explained the publishing house. “This was not a completely simple task, as the quality of the source pages required additional manual work. Separately, we made sure that the lines in the new edition were arranged as in the original. For a facsimile book, this is fundamental: to change hyphenation, intervals, or the rhythm of a page means losing part of historical accuracy.”
A special font was selected for the edition, maximally similar to the font of the original 1926 book. The background of the pages also imitates aged paper.
“We are glad that, together with the Yakub Kolas Museum, we were able to touch upon the history of the Belarusian book and the Belarusian language. For us, this was not just an order, but work with memory, heritage, and respect for the original edition,” noted the publishing house.
